June Member Meeting
June 11, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm CDT
Speaker: Becky Masterman: Mighty Mites vs. Mightier Beekeepers: Updates from the Mite Fighting Front
Description: It is hard to discuss honey bees without talking about Varroa destructor. The Bee Squad has been tracking these mites through management of urban, suburban and rural colonies across the Twin Cities in Minnesota since 2012. Masterman will share what the Bee Squad has learned about Varroa as well as updates from their collaborative MiteCheck program, a national collaborative, beekeeper citizen science project.
Becky Masterman has led the UMN Bee Squad program since 2013. She graduated from the UMN Twin Cities first with a BA (major in history, minor in biology) and then obtained a Ph.D. in Entomology under the direction of Dr. Marla Spivak studying honey bee hygienic behavior and neuroethology. Becky leads a talented Bee Squad team of 18 that provides bee outreach to beekeepers and the public. Learn more about bee research and the outreach mission of the Bee Squad at www.beesquad.umn.edu.
Also: Youth Scholarship students share their first beekeeping experiences of the season.
